Despite the dire political situation in the Middle East, the Abraham’s Well Project, a project to develop and equitably share water resources between the nations of the Jordan River Valley in the face of a deepening regional crisis, has continued to pursue paths for joint discussion and cooperation among Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians. The driving force behind the project remains both the scientific opportunity and the religious imperative to bring peace to the region through water.
An Israeli CSSR/EI Doctoral Fellow, Rana Samuels, and a Palestinian Post Doctoral Fellow, Abedalrazq Khalil, have been working together at Columbia University under the guidance of Prof. Upmanu Lall to develop models to project climate scenarios for the Middle East. They come, as expected, from different backgrounds with different perspectives on the region, and their personal debates reflect these realities. Yet, they collaborate on research and manuscripts to decipher past patterns in their shared climate, and to develop future rainfall predictions and scenarios for their shared part of the world.
