Description:
The Tropical Agriculture Program undertakes research, policy advising and educational activities on behalf of the UN Millennium Project’s Hunger Task Force, which is chaired by Dr. Pedro Sanchez. At the request of the UN Secretary-General, the Task Force is developing a global action plan to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving world hunger by 2015. The Task Force is coordinating a major research program to identify and target effective approaches to eliminating hunger; advises governments and convenes high-level political leaders, international donors, and stakeholders to develop national anti-hunger action plans. The Task Force’s recommendations focus on three broad areas: increasing food production, making markets work for the poor, and improving the nutritional status of the hungry. The group places special focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, which are home to the largest concentrations of hungry people.
