Beyond the Classroom

The Earth Institute's student programs offer opportunities for students to gain firsthand experience in research and global fieldwork to compliment their studies in environmental issues and sustainable development. Throughout the year, the Earth Institute provides a wide variety of internship and research assistant opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students at Columbia and Barnard. Students can work for one of the Earth Institute's leading centers or programs, apply for funds to undertake fieldwork, or showcase their research at our annual workshops.

Undergraduate Research Assistantships: A unique educational opportunity for undergraduates to participate in research under faculty guidance while gaining exposure to cutting-edge research and applied knowledge in the field.

Student Internships: A chance for students to work at one of the Earth Institute's research centers on a variety of multidisciplinary projects in areas such as communications, administration and research.

Travel Grants: Compensation for travel costs incurred during student research projects related to sustainable development and the environment.

Millennium Villages Internship Program: Placement at development intervention sites in sub-Saharan Africa to offer assistance to teams working in public health, business development, agriculture and infrastructure.
