Unconventional Hydrocarbon Extraction
Tuesday, May 7, 2013
The Earth Institute presents the final of the 2012-2013 Sustainable Development Seminar Series: Unconventional Hydrocarbon Extraction.
This panel focused attention on a wide variety of aspects of the 21st century hydrocarbon rush. Issues addressed included hydraulic fracture, fracking fluid additives, well bore integrity, and waste pond leakage. Other topics included likely well density in a fully developed field, likely well depletion rates, the viability and efficacy of various waste water treatment techniques, pros and cons of waste water injection (including induced earthquakes), global economic and strategic impacts of rapidly evolving reserve estimates, greenhouse gas implications, and the role of oil and gas (vs coal, for example) in the slow, ongoing transition to carbon-free energy.
Moderator: Peter Kelemen, Arthur D. Storke Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), Columbia University.
Geoffrey Abers, Lamont Research Professor, Associate Director, Division of Seismology, Geology & Tectonophysics, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, The Earth Institute, Adjunct Professor, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Columbia University;
James Meigs, Editor-in-chief, Popular Mechanics;
Sarah Odland, Business Manager, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Columbia University;
