The Earth Institute’s Sustainable Development Seminar Series brings together Earth Institute faculty members and research scientists working across diverse disciplines to address and communicate the major challenges of sustainable development.
The seminar series resumed this year with the seminar, "Natural and Manmade Disasters: Lessons for the Future.” The seminar offered salient perspectives and discussion on the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and the recent tsunami and nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan.

The second event in this year’s Seminar Series in Sustainable Development offered diverse perspectives and discussion on key challenges related to water and agriculture around the world including water management to reduce arsenic toxicity to rice; water metering in Gujarat; tensiometers in Punjab; impacts of irrigation pumping in the Bengal Basin; and irrigation efficiency in India, China, and the US.
